FDS says - "No need to check our work. Besides, it will only make God angry."
by Crisis of Conscience inthough i no longer believe the fds is indeed appointed by god, i guess because of what has been taught to me all these years through the wtbts, i still make an effort to try and look at both sides.
and then i come across this number below, which is how i arrived at my title for this thread.
***w81 2/15 p.19 do we need help to understand the bible?***.

Was There REALLY a First Century "Governing Body"??
by Lady Liberty infirst century governing body?the watchtower claims that a formal governing body was established in the first century, which is used as the basis for how the governing body of the watchtower society operate today.. "while all anointed christians collectively form god's household, there is abundant evidence that christ chose a small number of men out of the slave class to serve as a visible governing body.
the early history of the congregation shows that the 12 apostles, including matthias, were the foundation of the first-century governing body.
" - watchtower 1990 mar 15 p.11 the term "governing body" is 'loaded language' as it never appears in the scriptures and so has unique application within the pages of the watchtower.

Regarding Acts 15 and a "Governing Body"
by Ding ini couldn't find a window on which to post in xtreemlyconfused17's acts 15 thread, so i'm responding here.
some elder claimed that acts 15 shows the existence of a first century governing body.. quite the opposite!.
let's back up to acts 13. there, the holy spirit called saul (paul) and barnabas to missionary work.

Atheists..... throwing the baby out with the bath water ?
by snare&racket inthis saying permeates this forum with higher frequency than most.
despite being an open atheist amongst lots of religious people in my life, i have never been accused of doing this and i have never heard this saying attributed to my choice... appart from here.. i thought it would be best to clarify why i (and i assume others) decided to leave the bible behind after leaving the wt society.. realising the wt society was wrong desroyed my world, for me it meant so much.
i had given so much to it too, it just had to be true!

NewChapter, I have nothing to add except to say that I really enjoy the openness and honesty of your posts.
I can definitely say I'm agnostic, but atheism somewhat seems like a better fit for me. Your posts are more convincing to me in that regard, in comparison to a "believer's" point of view. I know your purpose is not to "convert" someone to atheism, but I find your thought process mentally stimulating. I lean towards what makes sense to me, and this seems to be it.
I just wanted to say that. I appreciate your awesome comments.

Possible Facebook blunder
by exwhyzee inso i made a couple of comments on my older brother's fb and i think i might have gone too far.. a little background.
my brother is a pretty popular guy... i am about a year younger than him and although we currently live on opposite coasts of the us., i know most of his jw friends.
he has about 600 fb friends and is on his page daily making announcements on there as if he's ashton kutcher talking to his fans....or something.

Choices you have to make after you learn the "truth"
by stuckinamovement inchoices.
by my nature i am not a negative person.
should i live my life as a hypocritical, tortured pretender, or stand up for what is right and lose my reputation, friends and family?

I feel for you SIAM, I really do. I personally though think that your personal integrity is more important.
I don't have kids, but I am married. My wife is not a strict JW, but believes it's the truth. That prevents me from pulling the band aid off because I still want to be supportive of her, namely socially. She's not completely open to associate with non-witnesses. So I have kept up appearances, only in the form of attending the meetings fairly regularly. Everything else, including the ministry, I have stopped, though I will do the occasional talk, bible reading.
I'm generally a very social person. So I don't fear walking away and loosing "friends." I KNOW I can make other friends, and I already have. That doesn't trouble me one bit. My problem or worry is having to divide my time between my wife and my new friends, if she's not on board to associate with them. And that honestly, I'd say, is the only thing keeping me in right now. Otherwise, I just could care less.
But the children factor has definitely got to add weight to the matter, and I'm saddened that you have to face that, just because you want to be honest with yourself. I wish mental peace for you despite these circumstances and hope you can reach a comfortable consclusion in your life. My thoughts are with you and anyone else in this situation. Eff the organization for doing this to people.
